9.40ct Lightning Ridge Sunset | 9.4ct
Some colour combinations exist in theory. This one is once in a lifetime.
A 9.40ct N7 light base crystal opal rough. The colour reads like a Lightning Ridge sunset. Vermilion at the base, with orange and goldy yellow fire burning over the top of it. Lilac and green interlaid through the same body, all firing simultaneously, all shifting as the stone moves.
This is not a stone that shows one colour and calls it done. Every turn reveals something different. The silica spheres responsible for this display have produced a colour sequence that nature does not repeat on demand.
Sand is present on the back and then it is gone. The face is clean. What you are seeing here is what is already present before a cutter has touched it. This thing is going to cut a gem.
Authentic. Rare. Unforgettable.
Body tone scale
The Body Tone Scale measures the lightness or darkness of an opal’s background, ranging from white to black. To use it, place your opal face-up on the chart and slide it along until its tone matches one of the reference samples, helping you accurately determine its body tone grade.

Brightness scale
The Brightness Scale measures the intensity and vibrancy of an opal’s play of colour, indicating how strongly the colours appear under light. To use the scale, place your opal face-up on the chart and move it along until its brightness most closely matches one of the reference levels. This helps you accurately assess the opal’s overall brilliance and visual impact.

They Don't Have To Be Big In The Ridge!
After years sourcing black opal from Lightning Ridge I know this. The size of an opal is only part of the measure. The colour, the pattern, the brightness. That's where the stone becomes art and tells its true story.
Frequently Asked Questions
Black Opal has a naturally dark body tone that intensifies the
brightness and contrast of colour within the stone. The finest Black
Opal in the world comes from Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, making it
the most prized and sought after opal on earth.
When assessing an opal, consider how the colour plays across the stone,
the brightness under light, the body tone, and the pattern. For rough
opal, look for visible colour bars and consider the potential of the
stone. If in doubt, Opal Intelligence is a great place to start
