Every piece in this collection dates to the Early Cretaceous period, roughly 100 to 110 million years ago, when the Lightning Ridge region sat beneath an ancient inland sea. Bone, teeth, shell and wood buried in that sediment were gradually replaced, particle by particle, with silica, eventually forming precious opal in the exact shape of the original organic structure.
The colour within an opalised fossil is produced the same way it is in any fine opal, through diffraction across microscopic silica spheres, larger spheres diffracting red, the rarest and most difficult colour to form without flaw, smaller spheres diffracting blue and violet at the opposite structural extreme. Finding this diffraction occurring not within a conventional stone, but within the exact form of a vertebra, a tooth or a shell, is what elevates an opalised fossil beyond either category alone, genuine palaeontological structure, carrying genuine gem quality fire and colour, in a single irreplaceable specimen.
