Colour in white opal is produced the same way as in any fine opal, through diffraction across microscopic silica spheres, larger spheres diffracting red, the rarest colour and hardest to form without structural flaw, smaller spheres diffracting blue and violet at the opposite structural extreme. Against a pale to milky base rather than a dark one, that colour presents with a softer, more delicate character, distinct from the intensity of black or dark opal, but built on the exact same underlying structural rarity.
