9.6ct Matched Opalised Yabby Button and Shell Collection
Three pieces of opal, born in a different world 100 million years ago, brought together today and presented to you as one.
Millions of years before anyone walked this ground, Lightning Ridge was freshwater to brackish country, linked to the sea. Rivers from the ocean reached inland here. Some of these creatures were preserved and turned to fossil, and even fewer turned to opal, the rarity of finding them at all still something close to a miracle.
In the overlap, where fresh water met the reach of the ocean, a small freshwater yabby went about its life alongside creatures that had drifted in from the sea. In time, they completed their life cycle and settled together into the same sediment, side by side in ground neither had been born to. Silica moved through the ground, filled the spaces left behind, and slowly turned shell into opal.
The yabby button that remains is freshwater in origin, the smallest of the three at 0.95ct. The two shells beside it, at 3.45ct and 5.2ct, are consistent with Trigonia, a creature that lived its life in the sea and in this case settled into freshwater ground far from where it began.
Luminescent green and gold catch the light, red and orange glow warm through the body, pink, blue and green roll across the face. Each is its own, and yet a unique palette pulls them together, connected through time, a defiance of the odds to be presented here today.
These rare and unmatched collector specimens were found in the same pocket, on the same claim, in the Corcoran.
0.95ct, 3.45ct and 5.2ct, 9.6ct combined weight.
This is a once in a lifetime find for the fossil and opal collector or enthusiast, a rare piece with nothing else quite like it, a family heirloom, an investment, three pieces that could be preserved as they are, developed into one of a kind jewellery, or dispersed amongst family as a symbol of eternal connection. We can help bring your vision to life.
Authentic. Rare. Unforgettable.

To use the scale, place your opal face-up on the chart and move it along until its brightness most closely matches one of the reference levels. This helps you accurately assess the opal’s overall brilliance and visual impact.
