Boulder Opal | Queensland | Opal Hub Australia

Discover boulder opal, a variety unlike any other precious opal, remaining naturally attached to its ironstone host rock rather than being cut free from it. At Opal Hub Australia, we source boulder opal from Queensland, offering a variety of opal defined as much by its formation as by its colour.

Boulder opal forms within cracks and cavities inside ironstone boulders, and colour presents here the same way it does in any fine opal, through diffraction across microscopic silica spheres, larger spheres diffracting red, the rarest colour and hardest to form without structural flaw, smaller spheres diffracting blue and violet at the opposite structural extreme. What sets boulder opal apart is the contrast, vivid colour set directly against dark, natural ironstone, an organic, irregular presentation that no other opal variety offers, since black and crystal opal are cut away from their host rock entirely, while boulder opal keeps it.

Where Our Boulder Opal Comes From

Boulder opal is found throughout Queensland, distinct from the black, dark and crystal opal fields of Lightning Ridge. Its formation within ironstone gives it a genuinely different geological character to New South Wales opal.

Why Choose Boulder Opal

Naturally attached to its ironstone host, unlike any other opal variety
Colour driven by genuine structural rarity, red and blue at opposite extremes of sphere size
Organic, irregular shapes with striking natural contrast
A completely unique gemstone, no two ever alike
Impossible to replicate or manufacture synthetically
