17.3ct Lightning Ridge Dark Opal Nobby Split Pair
A 17.3ct pair of natural Lightning Ridge Dark Opal Nobby Rough from a Quality Field, formed as a Nobby that has naturally broken or split into two pieces.
The larger side weighs 10.2ct and measures 23.88 × 12.50 × 6.35 mm. The smaller side weighs 7.0ct and measures 19.05 × 12.13 × 5.87 mm.
Body Tone indicators sit around N5 Dark, with B3 Brightness indicators visible through the exposed split faces.
From the inside surfaces, the colour bar shows the distinctive vertical structure we call the Opal Smile here at Opal Hub Australia, with bright Green and Blue dominating and touches of Yellow to Gold also showing through.
The exposed split gives a particularly good look into the internal colour structure, while the remaining natural Nobby matrix cap preserves plenty of potential still to be explored.
A bright, characterful pair from a Quality Field with strong visible colour and genuine cutting potential across both pieces. If cut, there is a strong likelihood of producing a naturally related matching pair from the same original Nobby.
It would suit a cutter looking for an interesting project, while also making a fantastic collector specimen in its current form.
Authentic. Rare. Unforgettable.
Body tone scale
The Body Tone Scale measures the lightness or darkness of an opal’s background, ranging from white to black. To use it, place your opal face-up on the chart and slide it along until its tone matches one of the reference samples, helping you accurately determine its body tone grade.

Brightness scale
The Brightness Scale measures the intensity and vibrancy of an opal’s play of colour, indicating how strongly the colours appear under light. To use the scale, place your opal face-up on the chart and move it along until its brightness most closely matches one of the reference levels. This helps you accurately assess the opal’s overall brilliance and visual impact.

The Opal Hub Story
The first time I saw a true gem black opal, it was like looking into another world. I can still see it in my mind's eye. That moment is why Opal Hub Australia exists.
They Don't Have To Be Big In The Ridge!
After years sourcing black opal from Lightning Ridge I know this. The size of an opal is only part of the measure. The colour, the pattern, the brightness. That's where the stone becomes art and tells its true story.
