Colour in rough opal is produced the same way as in any finished stone, through diffraction across microscopic silica spheres, larger spheres diffracting red, the rarest colour and hardest to form without structural flaw, smaller spheres diffracting blue and violet at the opposite structural extreme. At this stage, none of it has been revealed yet, no rubbing, no cutting, only the natural nugget or seam exactly as it was recovered from the field.
