How One Opal Changed Everything

My name is Anton Stavreas, and I am the Director of Opal Hub Australia.

My journey into Australian opal began with a single stone.

I was searching for a christening gift for my goddaughter and wanted to give her something that would endure. I chose a beautiful Australian opal and had it set into a white gold pendant, hoping that one day it might be passed to her own children and become a family heirloom.

At that time, I knew very little about opal.

What captured my attention was the play of colour. Watching flashes of colour appear, disappear and transform with every movement was unlike anything I had ever seen. It was impossible to look away.

That single stone sparked a curiosity that gradually became a lifelong pursuit.

Discovering Lightning Ridge

Before discovering Lightning Ridge, I had seen dark and black opals. They were undoubtedly beautiful, but I had not yet encountered what I would come to recognise as an exceptional Lightning Ridge Black Opal.

The first one left a lasting impression.

Some friends had found it, and I can still picture it today. The colours were metallic, vivid and alive, appearing almost as though they had been painted onto a perfectly black canvas. The pattern fanned gracefully from the centre like the rays of a rising sun, revealing a new expression of colour each time the stone moved.

It was more than simply a beautiful gemstone.

It revealed a level of quality and character that I had never imagined possible.

Since then, I have had the privilege of handling remarkable opals across every grade. Each one has reinforced the same lesson.
