This one promises to hold you captive.

"The Ancestor" is an opalised Cretaceous shark tooth recovered from Lightning Ridge, New South Wales. It belongs to the family Otodontidae, the direct ancestral lineage of Megalodon, the largest shark to have ever lived. The specimen is attributed to Cretalamna, an apex predator that ruled the seas of the Cretaceous period. Think of it as the great white shark of its era. Ferocious, relentless, built for dominance. Three rows of teeth grew outward simultaneously, rotating forward as the outer teeth were lost. A system engineered for continuous, unrelenting predation.

At Lightning Ridge the picture is different. During the Cretaceous period this region was a freshwater to near shore coastal environment, not open ocean. Cretalamna was an ocean hunter. When it came into these freshwater hunting grounds it was pursuing prey. On one of those rare incursions, it shed this tooth.

That alone makes it unusual. What makes it singular is the opalisation.

Otodontid teeth have been found in Western Australia. They have not been found opalised at Lightning Ridge. This is the only known example. It has been examined by specialist palaeontologists and is the subject of ongoing academic research. There is nothing else like it in the record.

The tooth itself is complete and exceptionally preserved. The wide curved root with its two pronounced lobes and angular pointed base is characteristic of Cretalamna and consistent with an adult specimen. Based on the morphology and size, the shark this tooth belonged to is estimated at three metres or more in body length.

This animal hunted through waters that are now desert. What it left behind survived the unimaginable passage of time, transformed by the earth itself into something extraordinary, and emerged from the ground at Lightning Ridge.

The rarity of what you are looking at cannot be overstated.

Contact us to enquire.

Authentic.
